Endodontic Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is endodontics?
Endodontics is a dental specialty focused on diagnosing and treating conditions inside the tooth, particularly infections or inflammation of the dental pulp. Root canal therapy is one of the most common endodontic treatments.

2. What happens during a root canal?
During root canal therapy, the infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected, and then sealed with a filling material. The tooth is later restored with a crown to protect it long-term.

3. Does a root canal hurt?
No. Modern root canal procedures are very comfortable, typically performed under local anesthesia or sedation. Most patients report that the experience is no more uncomfortable than getting a regular filling.

4. How long does a root canal take?
Most root canal treatments can be completed in one visit lasting about 60–90 minutes. More complex cases may require two appointments to ensure complete cleaning and healing.

5. How do I know if I need a root canal?
Common symptoms include lingering tooth pain, swelling, sensitivity to heat or cold, tenderness when chewing, or discoloration of the tooth. Only a professional exam and imaging can confirm the need for endodontic treatment.

6. What can I expect after treatment?
Mild tenderness is common for a few days after treatment, but this usually subsides quickly. Over-the-counter pain medication is often sufficient for relief, and most patients return to normal activities within 24 hours.

7. How successful are root canals?
Root canal treatments have a success rate of over 90%. With proper restoration and good oral hygiene, treated teeth can last a lifetime.

8. What if my tooth cannot be saved with a root canal?
If a tooth is too damaged for nonsurgical treatment, surgical options like an apicoectomy or tooth extraction may be discussed. Dr. Wolcott will recommend the most effective solution to preserve your oral health.

9. Can children need root canals?
Yes. Trauma or decay can affect young permanent teeth. Pediatric root canal treatments are available and are designed to protect developing teeth while maintaining function.

10. Why choose an endodontist for my treatment?
Endodontists like Dr. James Wolcott have advanced training beyond dental school, focusing exclusively on root canal and microsurgical procedures. Their expertise and use of specialized technology ensure the best outcomes.
